Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How often should I have a mammogram? A bone density?

A: A screening/annual mammogram is recommended every year until the end of life starting at age 40. Bone densities vary depending on the recommendation of a patient's primary doctor, but typically are every 2 years starting at age 50.

Q: Will my insurance cover my mammogram after I turn 40?

A: The going age currently is 40. While we cannot guarantee full coverage for a screening mammogram, you can always check with your insurance to make sure you have preventative coverage. We will always file your mammogram with insurance first, and anything not covered will be billed to you.

Q: Is there anything we have to do specifically before having our Mammogram?

A: There isn't anything in particular you need to do before your arrival for your exam. When you go back for your exam you will be asked to remove any deodorant, lotion, or perfume using provided wipes.

Q: What clothing should I wear for my exam?

A: Comfortable clothes that are easy to remove, if necessary. For a mammogram, your top and bra will need to be removed. For any other exam, comfortable clothing is always a good choice.

Q: Are all of your technologists female?

A: Yes, we currently have an all female staff.

Q: What insurances do you accept?

A: We accept all major insurance plans. As of right now, we do not accept Medicaid. There are a few Humana Medicare and United Healthcare Medicare policies that we are not in network with. If you happen to have a possible insurance we are not in network with, please call our office so we can accommodate you.

Q: What documents do I need to bring to my appointment?

A: At each appointment you will need to bring a photo ID of any kind, your insurance card and, if you are having a diagnostic test, we will need the doctor’s order before we can begin the exam.

Q: When should I arrive for my appointment?

A: You should always prepare for minimal paperwork. A good rule of thumb is to arrive 20 minutes before your scheduled appointment time to allow for any paperwork, use of the bathroom, or anything else that might arise.

Q: Do you perform CT scans or MRI’s?

A: No we do not. We currently offer 3D digital mammography, ultrasound scans, x-ray exams, and bone density exams.

Q: Do we have to lay down for a bone density exam?

A: Yes, there is a firm table that you will lie on during the exam for approximately 5 minutes.

Q: Is there a weight limit for a bone density exam?

A: Our machine has a weight limit of 300 pounds.

Q: Can we wear jeans while having a bone density?

A: You can wear whatever clothing you choose. Any pants that have metal on them (other than the zipper), will need to be removed for the exam. In this case, we will provide a gown.

Q: When do I need to have a doctor's order?

A: We need a doctor’s order for any diagnostic testing. The only exam we can perform without an order is a screening/annual mammogram.

Q: How long does each exam take?

A: Each exam is different. For a screening mammogram or bi-annual bone density each exam will take between 15 – 30 minutes. Ultrasounds and x-rays depend on what kind of exam we are doing.

Q: Can other people go into the exam room with me?

A: No. We do not have the space to allow additional people in the exam rooms. If you are here for a diagnostic procedure, family members are allowed to wait in the waiting room during the procedure, and may sit with you after while waiting for the results.

Q: Can I have a mammogram if I am pregnant?

A: If you are referring to a screening/annual mammogram, no. You should wait until no longer pregnant to have your annual. If there is a current problem that you have seen your doctor about, an ultrasound will most likely be ordered first. If a mammogram is needed to diagnose a problem, a shield will be placed over your belly.
